TRADigital Joints the craft of joining

Wood has been joined for a few thousand years using no mechanical fasteners or adhesives. These traditional joints work along the natural properties of wood and are solely made of wood, therefore making it easy to recycle. But these joints are mostly complex, thereby labor intensive and require proper woodworking skills to make. CNC mills and laser cutting machines are able to make complex shapes with high tolerances and require no hand tool skills. With the increasing accessibility of these machines they provide an excellent tool for modern day craftsmen, makers and hobbyists.

In this project I explore the possibilities of traditional and modern wood joints made with a CNC mill and/or laser cutter. Integrating these in furniture to see how these joints can be implemented in an aesthetic fashion.
